| Description | Dagger Magazine was created in a garage studio in Bedstuy Brooklyn. The studio was easily one of the most foul places in the world. I had it for 13 years, during four of those years the studio was over run with hundreds of rats. The rats had eaten a four foot wide hole in the concrete surrounding a sprinkler pipe. This led to a rat super highway running through my studio. When the slab was redone with steal mesh to prevent the rats from chewing through again I was left with three inches of rat poop covering the entirety of the 500 square foot floor. Thats how many rats there were, yet even through all that art was constantly being made there. I made sculptures and paintings and drawing and monster suits and puppets….and a magazine. It wasn’t always easy, people would say “Matt your going to get rat lung” or “Matt your going to get a brain parasite” or “Matt your going to get the plague” none of which came to pass, as far as I can tell. The studio was a place that both fascinated and repulsed, it inspired and disgusted. Some would want to hang out most did not. In that dungeon Dagger was born, and while the studio is now gone, having been kicked out due to gentrification and my generally unclean and disrespectful nature, my hopes are that the spirit of the studio lives on in daggermag.com with less biological pathogens and more cerebral ones. |
